Dr. Bridget Cavanagh (General Practitioner, FRACGP)

Our young family moved to Newcastle in 2022 and, honestly, one of the unexpectedly difficult parts of relocating was trying to find a reliable GP. The Hunter New England health system seemed completely overburdened at the time and it felt incredibly hard to find doctors who had availability, consistency, or the time to genuinely engage with patients properly. We were very lucky to eventually come across Dr Bridget Cavanagh at Newcastle Medical Hub and we've continued seeing her ever since.

What immediately stood out about Bridget was how seriously she takes listening. Appointments never feel rushed or transactional, and she has a way of making you feel genuinely heard without making you feel silly or dismissed. Even though she is obviously the medical professional, consultations often feel surprisingly collaborative, where concerns, observations and treatment options are properly discussed rather than simply dictated to you.

She also seems to take a very thoughtful, scientific and evidence-based approach to medicine. One thing that particularly impressed me was how she helped resolve a recurrent infection that had been lingering for quite some time. Rather than just cycling through random antibiotics, she approached it in a much more deductive and methodical way involving swab testing, reviewing outcomes against different medications and carefully observing the results over time until the issue was properly resolved. It gave me a lot of confidence that she was genuinely trying to understand the underlying issue rather than simply treating symptoms superficially.

She's also exceptionally good with children. Our kids genuinely like going to see her, which is not something I ever thought I'd say about a GP appointment. She always takes the time to actually speak with them directly, make them feel comfortable and included, and there's a lovely warmth to the way she interacts with younger patients. Small touches like her sticker drawer waiting for kids at the end of appointments might sound minor, but they make a huge difference in turning what can otherwise be an intimidating experience into something positive.

I should also say that the broader experience we've had with Newcastle Medical Hub has been very good overall. Other GPs we've interacted with there have also been professional and caring, which makes me think the clinic itself has a strong culture around patient care and communication.

For anyone new to Newcastle and struggling to find a dependable GP clinic, I would absolutely recommend trying to secure an appointment with Newcastle Medical Hub, and in particular with Dr Bridget Cavanagh if you can. Practice fees are quite transparently laid out on their website (https://newcastlemedicalhub.com.au/fees/), with a standard consultation costing $58.10 after rebate. I have also often observed that we have been bulk-billed (especially for children) for follow-up appointments.
