It was because of a chance meeting with Richard at the Startmate Demo day. Richard is one of the executives of the Brisbane Angels group. Richard has an unique perspective to assessing investment potential of start ups. Richard has been investing in technology since the early days of the internet. He also founded his own internet business and exited successfully. Richard is a also a long time market veterans. He was at Bankers Trust in its glory day.
He told me about Brisbane Angels. I joined a few months later. Funny thing is I am in Sydney. Yet, I chose to join the Brisbane Angels instead of Sydney Angels.
Brisbane Angels comes across as a very well run Angel investment group. First Wed of each month, the group will have its monthly meeting. The meeting is in person in Brisbane and available online. In each meeting, typically a few start up founders will pitch their companies. Members get to ask questions to each founder.
Members can also join the screening meetings on Thursday. Brisbane Angels will invite start-ups to pitch during these screening meetings. Only when these start-ups pass muster with the screening group, will they be invited to pitch during the monthly meeting to the broader members.
What is really nice is Brisbane Angels will have follow up call with the start ups after the pitch. Richard and his team will share their feedbacks. Even advise and shares ideas on strategy and how to improve their pitch.
The most important thing about angel investing is access to good potential start ups. It is most impressive how Richard manages to line up and source these interesting start ups every month. In the few online meetings since I have joined, I have learned a lot and came across multiple quite interesting prospects already.
The membership due for out of state/online member is $500 a year.
An important point to share is, through the Brisbane Angels "structure", an investment in a start up won't need to be a lot (can be say a few thousands). Brisbane Angels does charge an admin fee (think it is around 3-4%) on each investment.
In summary, Brisbane Angels are very nice bunch of people to learn from re angel investing. They have access to lots of interesting start ups in Australia. It is a very good angel investing group to join if you fancy yourself as an angel investor.
