Govindas Cinema and Restaurant

There are certain places in Sydney that feel almost immune to time. Govindas is one of them.

Tucked away in Kings Cross, it somehow continues to exist in a city that has become increasingly expensive, over-designed and optimised within an inch of its life. Meanwhile Govindas is still quietly doing its thing: ridiculously affordable vegetarian buffet, lie-down cinema upstairs, relaxed atmosphere, and some of the best date-night value you’ll find anywhere in Sydney.

I’ve been here probably five times over the years. I honestly can’t remember every film because half the magic of the place is the experience itself. I distinctly remember seeing Across the Universe and Hunt for the Wilderpeople, though I’ve also definitely fallen asleep mid-movie after overcommitting at the buffet. Even then I still had a good time.

This is not your normal cinema experience. You kick your shoes off, sink into these huge futon-style lounge cushions, and basically melt into the floor while watching a film. If you’re trying to impress a first date without spending half your pay cheque, dinner and a movie at Govindas is still one of Sydney’s great hidden weapons.

The food is excellent too. It’s buffet style, mostly vegan/vegetarian, and genuinely feels like it’s made thoughtfully rather than mass-produced. The cauliflower pakoras absolutely deserve the hype. Same with the dahl. The place has this warm, slightly bohemian energy that makes people instantly relax.

Importantly, it’s not pretending to be luxury dining. It’s casual, sometimes noisy, occasionally chaotic, and all the better for it. In a world of polished venues built for Instagram first and humans second, Govindas still feels human.

Honestly, Sydney would lose a small part of its soul if this place ever disappeared.
