Dr Du is hardly a secret as lots of kids go there. Its HSC result is consistently outstanding. If you look at its "honour roll" each year, it is like you are looking at another James Ruse, if not better.
Our son went to Dr Du. From what I could see, Dr Du's system works. Before every class, there is a quiz (for the week before). And after every class, there is home work. The home work book has the core home work questions, plus optional harder questions. Every week, the student has to pass the quiz and hand in the home work. If not, the parent will be notified via email.
Dr Du typically teaches topics ahead of the school. The student gets to cover the topics again at school. The topics are "reinforced" so to speak.
Also Dr Du's questions tend to be harder in general. BUT it makes perfect sense because 4U maths is really about separating the students in different tiers. Some exam questions are designed to be hard. In exam condition, it is really about have you seen this type of question before and know how to go about it, rather than think on your feet during the exam.
An important tip for Dr Du is before enrolling the student has to sit for a test so Dr Du can work out which class to allocate for the student. Do brush up maths before the Dr Du test. Dr Du has different classes (A1 to A3 are streamed and then the B class). A1 students get more home work and harder optional questions.
Tutors at Dr Du are typically former students who did well in HSC. They are good role models for the students. Our son really liked his tutor in Yr12 at Dr Du.
Our son called himself an A3 warrior i.e. he was not one of the big brains at Dr Du. In his school, he was not in the top 2 maths class either. Yet, he achieved Band6 in 4U maths in HSC.
Dr Du has 2 campuses (Burwood and Hurstville). The Burwood site is right next to the train station. Classes can be in person or online. One thing to note is the online classes can only be "streamed" when the student is at one of the campuses. For the online class, the student still needs to do the quiz and hand in the home work.
One more rant from me. In some schools, number of students allow to take Maths Extension 2 is capped. If your kid is thinking about maths coaching, start early. It builds confidence that he/she can do maths.
