Australia is really the lucky country. I am not talking about the mining industry here.
Having been to Singapore and Malaysia, my conclusion is different laksa places in Sydney are all pretty good. In fact, I like the laksas in Sydney better. Feels to me they use too much coconut milk in laksa in Singapore/Malaysia. The various laksas in Sydney have more kicks to it. OK. While I could generalizing, we have it pretty good here in Sydney, laksawise.
In Sydney, the good laksa places are turning into chains these days. In my mind, the two classics are always Malay Chinese and Ipoh/Jimmy. Then we have the more recent Into Laksa. Into Laksa now has 6 shops all over Sydney.
The one we frequent is Into Laksa in St Leonards (lower ground floor of the shopping mall.. take the escalator down from the street level and the level above Coles). It is next to the library. Parking is ample. Just park in the shopping centre. Easy walk (just cross the road.. 5 mins or so) from Metro or St Leonards station.
I always order the vege laksa. The soup always packs a good kick. Not overly coconut milky. Also lots of vege (cabbage, carrot, tomato) and best of all the fried tofu puff. More importantly, the vege laksa is good size and good value at $16. I think $16 is pretty good value these days, especially for a laksa that is good and filling. The other laksas (chicken, beef, seafood, prawn) range between $17-23.
Our other typical orders would be Hainan chicken rice, Bak Kut Tey, Ipoh Hor Fun. Overall, I would say tasty and good size. Rock solid that we can go back every week. Price range is around $18-22 or so. So value wise, in line with most other Sydney places.
One tip is extra noodle cost like $3 but don't think the extra noodle is worth it. For me, one standard bowl is good enough and filling (and I am a big eater for those who know me haha).
Another thought is how come there are not more decent laksa places in the North Shore. I wreck my brain and I struggle to think of another decent laksa place in North Shore. Any suggestions would be welcome :)
