I don't need to say much about Malay Chinese. Pretty much everyone knows about it. Just look at the lunch time crowd. We went today to Malay Chinese (Circular Quay) around 1:15pm. We still had to queue and wait a bit for the food.
I think Malay Chinese has the best Har mee (prawn noodle) in Sydney.
The soup was punchy. Two types of noodles so interesting texture. Two slices of thick pork. Think the cut was pork fillet if I am not mistaken. Malay Chinese made real food for sure. But the real secret behind the Har mee was its own sambal sauce, and the specks of pork cracklings/skins in the soup.
I have not had a Har mee in Sydney that came close to Malay Chinese. The only other place memorable was Nanyang Tea Club in Market City (now close). It was because the prawn in the Har mee there was massive (quite theatrical) but not as tasty vs. Malay Chinese. We also had the Har mee at Ho Jiak in China Town. To be honest, I couldn't remember much from it... Ha... despite the big price tag there.
We went to Singapore and Malaysia last year. Everywhere we went, we ordered Har mee when we could. Most were only OK but nothing special. An interesting place was a Har mee in an open air food court in Ipoh. It was good but only because it almost tasted like Har mee from Malay Chinese.
Bottom line... Malay Chinese's Har mee is the best Har mee in Sydney. Worth giving it a try when you are there next.
Har mee is available at Circular Quay on Tuesday and Friday. It is available on Sussex St on Wed and Thursday.
A Har mee costs $18.5...... Less than a bowl of ramen these days.
We have been having Har Mee from Malay Chinese for over 25 years. From Hunter Street to now. I miss the day when they would give you a mandarin with the noodle when it was in Hunter Street. Good food is not only from the fancy places on Instagram but places that we can go back to day after day and still relishing the experience after 20 odd plus years.
