Getting around in Taipei is easy. Just hop onto the Metro/MRT.
Where to eat in Taipei ? Everyone knows about the night markets but honestly if I go to a night market every night it is very tough. Night markets are great for sometime foods.
Where we go frequently in Taipei is the Dinghao Mall (頂好名店城). In the basement, it has its food court. There are three places worth checking out.
Look out for the ramen shop (see Pic 1-3). It is in one of the far corners next to the phone repair shop. It was quite new. Think it was only opened last year. Ramen is everywhere in Taipei. This one was different because it has a chicken+oyster soup base. I really liked the soup there. Very distinctive. During our last trip, I went once by myself. The second time I took the family there.
The second place is 台南小卷米粉. Its specialty is noodles/snacks from Tainan. The dish to check out is its squid noodle soup (小卷米粉). Thin rice noodle. Plus almost a squid in each bowl (Pic 5). The clear soup base was especially nice. During our last trip, we went out of our way to look for squid noodle soup everywhere we went. This little shop in Dinghao mall remained the best that we could find in Taipei.
The third place is 紫琳蒸餃.You can't miss it. It is famous for its steamed dumplings (Pic 5). I won't do the foodie thing and say its dumplings are plump and juicy.. Yadeyadeyada. But what I know is there is always a big queue there even outside of dining hours. For me, its food is decent value. Its steamed dumplings are chucky and tasty. Also do try their sour hot soup (酸辣汤) with noodle. Tasty, with a kick, and filling. If you ask me, I think DTF is living on its laurels... Way over priced. I would much rather go where the locals go.
Finding Dinghao mall is easy. Just get off at either Zhongxiao Fuxing or Zhongxiao Dunhua MRT station. It is roughly located in the middle of the two MRT station.
If catching a taxi, just ask to go to 頂好名店城 and the taxi driver will know.
After food, do wander out the back of the Dinghao mall and explore the alleyways. Plenty of other restaurants, fashion, snack places nearby.
