When visiting Taipei with a young family, do visit the Taipei zoo.
It is worthy of a day trip. Easily accessible via MRT. The Zoo is at the end of the brown line (文湖線).
Taipei Zoo is as good as any zoo out there. Lots of animals, including lion, tiger, rhino, elephant, gorilla, bear, birds, reptiles etc etc. There is a Koala pavilion as well.
The two must visits for me would be the Panda Pavilion where one can see pandas up close. See Pic 2. It is almost therapeutic watching pandas lounging around. Not a care in the world chewing through piles of bamboo. The other must visit in the zoo is the Pangolin Dome. It is literally a big dome with a "rainforest" inside, where animals (birds, and monkeys) roam free. Once, as we were walking up the bridge in the dome, a sloth was climbing up on the guard rail side by side with us. We managed to get very close with the sloth. See Pic 3.
In terms of food, there are kiosks throughout the zoo. There is a McDonald's near the entrance.
One thing to note is the zoo is "up hill". The entrance is at the base of the hill. For family with young kids, it may be worthwhile to get a ticket for the shuttle train (NT$5).
For family with bigger kids, one activity to consider is to rent bikes outside the zoo and ride around the area along the river. Our kids love it.
Taipei zoo is a nice day out and spend time with the kids, and get away from the hustle and bustle of city living for a brief moment.
