If you are looking for something to do in Sydney in Oct, sign up for the 7 Bridges Walk.
It is a fund raising event for the Cancer Council.
We signed up but did not make much effort when it came to fund raising. My motivation, as an oldie, was just to see if I could complete the walk. To be honest, my knee has always been creaky so thought I should at least try something "tough" before I have to officially admit father time has caught up.
Looking back, I am glad I did it. The walk took me past a lot of the roads I have driven past over the years. And finally got to see each of the bridge up close. Before the event, I certainly would not be able to count or name all 7 bridges.
Also got to see the Sydney Harbour from many vantage points. And I was surprised by how many nice walking tracks Sydney boasts around the harbour. I also enjoyed walking through the neighbourhood around Balmain. I distinctly remembered there was this family with young kids selling icy poles in their front yard.
The event was well organized. No way one could deviate from the route. Many signs and volunteers were there. At different stops, there were toilets and food (available for purchase). And there were even free buses to hop on if the need arose.
One funny tip. It was also a fun day out in terms of people watching. We basically walked side by side with "certain" folks for quite some time unless they either overtook us or slowed. We were walking behind this newly dating couple. Watched from afar, I very much doubted if the girl enjoyed the walk that much and if they would last the distance. In our case, Alice was more than ready to skin me alive by the end of the walk. The point is, if you are going on the walk with someone, make sure they have no choice but will be stuck with you for eternity comes hell or high water ha....
Another tip is maybe think about starting in Lane Cove. Because for us, Lane Cove was a chokepoint in the route where there was a traffic jam to get down the stairs down into the gully. We were stuck there for like 20 mins.
Our time was almost 5 hours and a half. And at the end of the walk, even got a "medal" to show we completed the walk.
If looking for something out of the ordinary to do in Sydney in Oct, give the 7 Bridges Walk a chance. For any Sydney sider, it should be almost a bucket list item to tick off.
