A friend asked me this question.... What to do in Taiwan if one is spending a week or a week and a half there ?
It also depends on if there are kids and how old are the kids.
Here is my list. Also has some typical touristy spots.
Taipei
101 and surrounding area
The National Palace Museum
CKS Memorial Hall
Tam Shui => Think Manly in Sydney or Stanley in HK
Shilin night market (or any other night market)
Taipei Zoo (there are pandas, and also hire a bike outside the zoo)
Leofoo Resort (kind of like Taronga Zoo overnight stay)
Shopping + eating areas (Ximending, Taipei Main Station, Zhongxiao Fuxing/Dunhua)
Hot spring in Beitou (Or look for a nice hotel with hot spring)
Visit different temples to cover your spiritual and worldly needs
Taipei arena (roller skate + ice skating for teenagers)
Wufenpu - garment wholesale district (something to do for teenagers)
National Science Education Centre in Shilin (for younger kids)
Taipei Children's Amusement Park (for younger kids)
Catch a basketball or baseball game
Check out local food, buffet, ramen (hard to have bad food in Taiwan would be my experience)
Outside of Taipei
National Marine Museum of Marine Biology in Pingtung (southern tip of Taiwan)
Taroko Gorge in Hualien
Sun Moon Lake
