A solution to gutter overflow - Gutter Pumper

This is not a personal recommendation but a friend was raving about it. Thought I should share this.

A few months ago, another friend spent thousands to fix a gutter overflow situation. And yesterday another friend mentioned his experience to fix the gutter overflow situation. The plumbers recommended him to replace the gutter/downpipe. The quotes were as much as $30-50k.

The problem with gutter overflow is water may end up going into the roof area. It is something that if you know about it, probably worth fixing.

The key reason why gutter will overflow is because the downpipe is rarely "full". Due to the weir effect i.e. water spinning around the downpipe, downpipe is typically filled with 2/3 air i.e. much less water is going down the downpipe when rain is heavy. See Pic 2. The Gutter Pumper is a "gadget" that will break the "air bubble" and ensure full capacity of the pipe is used. See Pic 1. Apparently, its drainage capacity is as much as 60 liters per minute.

The idea is to install a Gutter Pumper at another location of the gutter. Then it is fitted with a small pipe and drain excess water away.

Note the installation instruction is quite specific. Can only use 20mm pipe. Pipework must remain vertical or horizontal. Sloping the pipe will break the "super drainage". See Pic 3.

Importantly, my friend did the installation himself, rather than getting a plumber. Apparently, he even had a long chat with the owner of the product to understand how it works and installation instruction.

A Gutter Pumper costs $8-10. Then just need PVC pipes and connectors. See Pic 3 for an installation. Material cost is minimal.

Something to watch out is Gutter Pumper only works if the gutter is clean and not prone to getting leaves/debris stuck. It is because leaves can easily block any 20mm pipes.
