One of our fence posts is wobbly. The base is rotten so have to replace the post.
I went down the rabbit hole about treated pine in the past few days.
For market intelligence, different trades quoted $450, $480, $580 to replace the post + materials + paint (we have the paint already).
Here is where it got tricky... Our fence post is non standard size (112mm x 112mm). what are the standard sizes... Bunnings stocks 88mm, 90mm, 100mm... I was also told 115mm is also widely available.
Also there are different grades of treated pine.... H3 is for above ground. For fence post, to do it properly needs H4 (can be buried underground).
I wonder for the quotes I got from the tradies....What grade of treated pine they would be using ?
Turning to the search for the unicorn 112mm H4.... Bunnings has various 112mm x 112mm H3 pine online. But Bunnings only has 112mm x 112mm H4 at length of 3.6M.. Each m costs $55... So we are looking at $199 (minimum). Canterbury Timbers also only stocks 3.6M length. A whole bunch of websites stocking shorter length turned out to be in Perth and Victoria. I thought wasn't it strange ? If the same cut of wood is available in Vic, why not in NSW ?
I started looking for timber companies (not Bunnings) in Sydney. Came across North Shore Timber & Hardware. I had a look because it is close to home on North Shore. The website is ancient. Had to dig into its timber catalogue (see Pic 2). And found it. It stocked the 2.4M length and H4 grade. I called and confirmed.... Because I thought it would be a pain to move, I asked about delivery cost... Around $80 to where we are.
I ended up going to pick it up... Put down the back seats and managed to move the 2.4M post across the car with enough spare space. All up, the timber post cost $130.... Looks like I need to buy a paint primer as well....
Also North Shore Timber has other locations like Thornleigh, Erina, East Gardens, and Miranda.
FYI... Another place that stocks the H4 in shorter length is Warringah Timbers in Cromer.
For future reference, when Bunnings doesn't store certain timber SKUs, worth checking out the specialist timber places all over Sydney.
