The idea of The Ordinary Jackpot is simple. What if one day you win a jackpot ?
However, the K-drama did not develop as one would expect. Instead, it became a workplace drama.
The main lead (Lee Jun Hyuk) was a team leader at HongSeong International. HS was an agent/distributor of brands in Korea. He led a team of 4-5 people. Stuck in a bit of a rut. The No.2 in the team was a total headache as he was an older person who was passed over for the same job.
Then one day, Lee won the jackpot. He did not go crazy and live it up. He still went to work.
The important idea of TOJ was how the jackpot helped him changed how he approached work. He became more assertive, took risks and back his own ideas.
With his new attitude, he formed a partnership with the disgruntled No.2. He also looked out for his team. Let them have enough space to shine. He also stood up for the junior team member.
TOJ offered an Interesting (but brief) look into the agency business in Korea. HS International had several challenges. Lee, and his team, tackled these problems head on and won. Let's be honest, these challenges facing HS International won't make your blood boil. But they were interesting stories.
I enjoyed the ending where he shared a knowing nod with the coffee shop owner.
There was only 1 baddie in the drama but he wasn't that bad actually. He had an axe to grind that's all.
It was adapted from a web novel.
On Asianwiki, it is rated 94. Domestic rating increased from 4% to 6% through the run.
TOJ has 10 episodes. Each episode is only 40-50 mins. A tip is it has its easter egg after each episode ending.
I enjoyed TOJ. I binged the last 3 episodes and only went to bed at 3am. Overall, not earth shattering by any means but it was something different. Something light, short, and in a way, inspirational or thought provoking. Believe it or not, it shared some work place wisdoms that I went aaa-haa.....
If you are looking for something different, TOJ is not a bad K-drama to check out.
