Our kids are solid player. They have been playing chess since primary school. we would travel to chess tournaments during school break. Chess has brought us to all the major cities in Australia, except Darwin.
Looking back, I am proud of what they have achieved and they have worked hard on their game. I think they have also learnt a lot about life from chess in their own way.
Through chess, we have met some amazing people. We first met David and Sabrina during JETS in one holiday. They run the Chess Life Academy in Adelaide. They are truly lovely people.
We bumped into them again during Doeberl Cup the year after. It was a tough tournament for the kids. In hindsight, thank God, David and Sabrina were there. They were so helpful and kind enough to console us, the poor chess parents.
The kids were in a tough spot. They were OK in Chess. FIDE rating of 1400-1600. No more dead easy games so to speak. They wanted to do better in chess but struggled to make progress. Our boy was slowly became disenchanted with chess.
We asked David if he would take on the kids as their coach. Lucky for us, David agreed. Every two weeks, they would connect online.
David is a physicist by training from the Netherlands. He has been coaching chess for years. To us, he has always been more than a coach of chess (the game). He always shares his love of the game with the kids. During tournaments, he would talk to the kids after each game and console/nudge/cheer the kids on. For our boy, David rekindled his love for chess.
David is more than a chess coach who passes on the different openings/lines and thinking of chess. He is a teacher of life and impart his wisdom about life readily. I have learnt a few things from him as well :) We are fortunate to have met David and Sabrina.
I cannot recommend David enough if you are looking for a chess coach for your kid.
