It is a bit of a story. Alice is studying food science at the moment. Apparently, nitrate is very bad for you. So she is on a war path to cleanse our diet of nitrate. As a result, she won't buy any ham anymore (or processed small goods). But we still need to prepare sandwiches for the kids for school. Suddenly, Alice turned to smoked salmon for the kids' lunches. Wow... Was I shocked when I saw how expensive smoked salmon can be.
In supermarkets, smoked salmon can easily cost $50-60/kg. Online some smoked salmon can cost just as much if not more.
Then I changed my online search and searched for "smoked salmon wholesale". I hit pay dirt. First, I discovered Foodbomb and ordered twice from one shop. And that shop somehow disappeared.
Then I found Cafia on Foodbomb. But on Foodbomb, Cafia only stocked one SKU. So I went to Cafia direct (cafia.com.au). Apparently, it is a wholesaler in Rozelle. On its website, it has different SKUs of smoked salmon. It has 2 SKUs at $36/kg. It also has the expensive SKU that cost like $78/kg. Both Ocean King (brand) + Norwegian sliced taste good actually. What I like about these two SKUs was not particularly salty. We have ordered a few times from Cafia direct already.
Frankly, $36/kg is hard to beat. Have a look at how much smoked salmon cost at the Sydney Fish Market. Or elsewhere online for that matter. There is a catch though. Minimum order size is $180 so we had to order like 5 packs each time. Good news is once an order hits $180, it is free delivery. Guess you can mix and match other stuffs in your order to hit the $180 threshold.
Our experience with delivery is pretty good. When ordering, need to nominate a day for delivery. They would deliver in a big styrofoam box. Once we were not home when the delivery came, they followed instruction and left the box near the front door. The smoked salmon were frozen and had no problem keeping well "outdoor" for 3 hours.
Also once one SKU was out of stock, they called and checked if they could replace the SKU with another brand.
Also one tip is the website Cafia uses is Fresho. Don't think the website charges the credit card upon order, it only charges the credit card after delivery.
Another thing that is good about Cafia is we didn't need to pretend or apply to order as a restaurant like some other food wholesale website.
