If you are travelling around Scandinavia, a better alternative to flying is to take advantage of the overnight ferries. The trip leave around 18:30 in the evening and arrive at Tallinn 8:00 in the morning. Why bother if it takes so long? Firstly you save one night of accommodation cost. Second, it’s way more interesting and pleasant than airport security. And lastly you maximise sightseeing time without losing half a day getting to and from airport as ferry terminals are close to centre.
The sunset travelling out of the Stockholm archipelago is simply spectacular. There are little houses scattered amongst the many small islands. The ship itself is a ferry, so don’t expect a Carnival cruise level ship. Cabins are simple and clean. I had an inside single room and works for me. There are shared cabins as well. The meatballs dinner was very good.
I think a lot of Swedes goes on the ferry to take advantage of duty-free alcohol. 90% of the supermarket floorspace is entirely devoted to alcohol.
When you book on the Tallink ferry company website, look for “Day Ticket” or “Cruise” option which includes a return ticket even if you plan to go one way. Those are acually cheaper than one way. The logic behind this pricing is that passenger travel is the least profitable, compared with cruise passengers who tends to spend much more. It should be noted that this is a violation of the T&C and if caught, might have to pay a penalty for not catching the ferry back. But realistically no one checks what kind of tickets you have when you get off at Tallinn.
